CATE LEACH
The Darien resident has studied art at The Silvermine School of Art, The Center for Contemporary Printmaking and the Darien Arts Center with Constance Kiermaier. Previously she danced with The New York City Ballet under the direction Of George Balanchine.
Cate's paintings, prints and assemblage have been exhibited at museums and galleries throughout New York and Connecticut, including Lyman Allyn Art Museum, Housatonic Museum, Sacred Heart University, The Flynn Gallery at Greenwich Library and La Guardia Airport. She also has had two solo exhibitions at The Prince Street Gallery in NYC.
In addition to Art/Place Gallery, she is a member of the Silvermine Artist Guild and The Concepts Group.
Cate says, "These works are inspired by my dreams; some comforting, some not. In Dreamscapes I challenged myself to express these ephemeral and transitory thoughts and short stories into art. In some cases a painting was called for. In others, more complex three dimensional works were appropriate. It was my desire to manifest these ideas in ways that reflect the hallucinatory and surreal quality of dreams. They all are intensely personal, yet there is a universality in the sense that having dreams is part of the human experience."
ELIZABETH HIGGINS
As a Helena Rubenstein Award recipient, Elizabeth earned her MFA in Painting from The Parson's School of Design in 1985, where she studied with Paul Resika, Leland Bell, John Heliker and Robert deNiro,Sr. Prior to coming to New York in 1983, she earned her BFA, studying painting and printmaking at Queen's University, Canada.
Her work has been exhibited in New York City, Toronto, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Connecticut galleries and in many private and corporate collections including Arthur Andersen & Co. Connor Clark Co. VIA RAIL Canada and the University of Toronto. Elizabeth is a member of The Silvermine Guild of Artists and Zeuxis in NYC. She will have a solo show in 2019 at prince Street Gallery in New York.
She says, "Fidelity to nature is relative to me. I am not interested in literal depictions, rather it is the relationships between color and shape that inspire me to begin a painting. They serve as a beginning ....a starting point. It is the "in-between", the hovering between representation and abstraction that I want to explore."
