PHYLLIS PECKAR CLAMAGE
Phyllis is presenting this retrospective rof her paintings, handmade paper constructions and prints. The Stratford resident has received numerous awards and has been widely exhibited in shows and galleries in the Northeast, including American Craft Museum, New York, the Aldrich Museum, Silvermine Gallery, Soho 20, Greenwich Art Society, Brookfield Craft Center, the Bruce Museum, and Boston Symphony Hall. Her work is also in many private and corporate collections including Champion International, Credit Suisse, I. B. M. Aetna Insurance Co.
She has taught or lectured or been an instructor at N. Y. Botanical Garden, Silvermine Guild, the Fashion Institute of Technology, the New Britain Museum, and the Stamford Museum, among others.
Her paintings have rhythm, harmony and an interplay of layered geometric shapes. "I feel like I am in a world of visual music" she has said. Her style has evolved from color field to lyric abstraction. There are complicated layered structures with vertical and horizontal and diagonal shifts.
After 20 years of painting, she then did independent research in Japan to learn to make handmade paper to add to her skills. She has worked with her own and papers from all over the world, has taught papermaking and prints on various papers and silk organza. Her love affair with paper has an imaginative use of texture and dimension.
